Now anyone who grew up watching cartoons in the 80s knows that the cartoons today in many respects can’t hold a candle to the cartoons 20 years ago. While some animated series were overt in getting their messages across to children (Ted Turner’s Captain Planet and G.I. Joe come to mind). However, some were more subtle in their message. I don’t think anyone who watched Peewee’s Playhouse, for instance, would’ve expected that show to become a cult icon for the gay culture (don’t ask how I know that).
