George Reeve

Superman.

Christopher Reeves, is the measure of who we think of when we say Superman. Meaning the new actor didn’t leave his mark on the role of playing the man of steel. But it’s Superman, of the fifties we think of who set the standards for realism of the part. The actor we know as George Reeve, no kin to the seventies hero.

George role remind of how realistic Clark Kent was played. Not one to play timid or weak like the one they tried to portray under Cary Bates writing of the comic books. George Reeve, was just as keen on Lois Lane trying to figure his alter ego out. And he has a wink to alert the viewers he was aware of her at any giving point.

He was the image that Curt Swan played so illustratively in the comics. Strong, direct, and firm. Sure he had weak villains, and any strong individuals wouldn’t have played out during the communist era of McCartney.

But the creators of the Master of Might, has got to be proud that the hero who is probably the best known broadcaster in comic books is still the image they worked on. Sure we know some back ground on Reeve, and how he felt stereotyped in the part. But most any part you create is going to leave a image in viewers minds.

Ask Clayton Moore, John Hart tried to be the Lone Ranger after him on the show. But it didn’t catch on. And Weismuller the most know Tarzan, with some measure of competition from Gordon Scott, and the great Lex Barker. And since George, is the only television version. He is like Ron Ely, the television only Tarzan.
