Anime review: Blue Gender

A quick review of the fantastic Anime series Blue Gender

I have never been that much of a fan of Anime series other than Manga
ones. Series like Gundam, Neon Genesis, and Dragonball Z to name a few. I have
always stuck with Mangas like the Ghost in the Shell series, Doomed Megalopolis
etc.

I came across a series called
Blue Gender when I was living in my student house (one of my house mates had
it, which I borrowed and never gave back). I was skeptical at first as I’ve
always found the animation and general production value to be of a less quality
than real Manga.

I was wrong to be skeptical. The series is 26, 25 minute parts over 3
discs and from the first episode, if not the opening credits, I was hooked. The
series follows a young lad called Yugi. Beginning in modern times, doctors tell
him he has an incurable genetic defect and must be put into cryo-stasis for a
few years until they can develop a cure.

He awakes around 30 years
later being rushed down a corridor by soldiers. They are attacked by a giant
bug and the soldiers are killed. As the bug goes for Yugi, a huge robot comes
to his rescue and kills it. The robot is a suit of armor piloted by Marlene, a
fighter in a Sleeper recovery unit. Eventually Yugi, Marlene and the other soldiers
leave the hospital where Yugi was and attempt to rendezvous with a shuttle that
will take them to the new home of mankind: the cold reaches of space.

As the series goes on, Yugi discovers all of Earth’s cities in ruins:
eaten and devastated by the giant bugs (called Blue). Reaching the shuttle
port, they are attacked by Blue and have to reach Vikanor space base in Russia
or else they will left on Earth.

There is a lot more emotion in
the series then I first thought; mainly dealing with Yugi coming to terms with
what has happened in his 30 year sleep, and coming to terms with why the
soldiers are so cold and emotionless to the random survivors they encounter
along the way (there is a heart wrenching scene where Yugi promises an 8 year
old girl he’ll save her, only for her to be eaten right in front of him).

Marlene also changes her views
on the world after being around Yugi’s innocence. But that changes after the
soldier unit take heavy losses and Yugi must be trained up to use the robotic
suits.

This isn’t just another science fiction Anime series, there’s allsorts
going on with romance, Genetic testing, Animal Testing, coup-de-tas in the
space station, Mother nature issuing a “Suicide Order” on humans, and the age
old question of what makes a human a human?

This is a must for fans of
Mecha, Aliens, action Animes. It’s got the lot.

By the time you reach the final episodes it will leave you spell bound.
I recommend this to anyone who wants to watch something that’s actually good
for a change.

Definitely gets 10 out of 10 in my book

Watch it!!!
