Freaks and Geeks: The Amazing One Hit Wonder

Freaks and Geeks was a popular show that lasted one season from 1999 to 2000. It one two Emmy Awards, including 16 other nominations.

Freaks and Geeks (1999) is by far one of my favorite television shows from the ’90s, along with That ’70s Show. Although the show ran for 1 season with 18 episodes, it was a popular hit during the time, and today hundreds of You Tube fans watch it, wondering how it was cancelled off the air.

The reason for the cancelation of this show is sad and frustrating due to the fact that it could have been successful. During the 1990s period, many people weren’t watching TV on Saturdays, which was the day when the show was aired. While people were playing outside or getting to meet up with friends and relatives, few people were watching this show. As a result, the show was cut off the air due to its failure to attract fans, although fans did love the show.

The show was considered a one hit wonder, and it won 2 emmys after its first and final season. I myself wish this show was still on the air, because it was funny, it had great actors and actresses, and it was realistic to how high school life actually was.

Freaks and Geeks was a show about the two “unpopular” groups in a public high school. Sam, Neil, and Bill represent the “geeks” who “watched Star Wars 27 times.” There journey throughout the show ranged from beating up a bully in the Pilot episode, (which is hilarious because it is realistic to how high school fights actually are) changing beer kegs for Lindsay’s party, to watching porno videos in order to figure out a joke (The beginning was “A man with no arms or legs” and ends with “Well, how do you think I rung the doorbell.” That was all they gave you in the episode, but I understood the joke). The “freaks” in the show are those that smoke pot after school and skip class to prepare for Battle of the Bands. Lindsay joins this group, but throughout the season she is tied between being a freak, or being a geek, which she formerly was.

I would rate this show a 5/5 stars. It has great humor, its realistic of high school life and the different social groups in them. The show also has great actors and actresses, such as Seth Rogan (Superbad), Linda Cardellini (Scooby Doo), James Franco (Spiderman), Samm Levine (Did short parts in Family Guy, How I Met Your Mother, and Saving Private Brian),Jason Segal (How I Met Your Mother), and Martin Starr (Superbad, Invention of Lying [waiter]).
