American Idol

It’s down to the final six. Here are my thoughts on how the singers performed.

It was strange to see an episode of American Idol without seeing Sanjaya on the show. I was always curious as to what his hair would look like or how he would attempt to sing a song. With that said, let’s get to American Idol.

Ryan said that the calls were not only going to save the singers, but they were going to save lives. This week’s shows were about Idol gives back. It’s for charity. They are trying to save the lives of children in American and Africa. I think that’s very commendable.

The theme was inspirational songs

Chris

Chris sang “Change The World” by Eric Clapton. I like this song so I was curious as to how Chris would sing it. I think he did a good job. He had a couple of pitch problems and he was a little nasal again, but he was good. He was better than he was last week. Randy thought it was great and he was in it to win it. Paula thought it was a great song choice. Simon was reminded of the first time they saw him. He thought the vocals were good and he did really well. That must have felt great for him since Simon doesn’t usually compliment him.

Melinda

Melinda sang “There Will Come a Day” by Faith Hill. I’m not familiar with this song so I didn’t know what to expect as far as the lyrics go. I thought she did a great job. She made the song sound like a gospel song. Since Faith is a country singer, I doubt this is supposed to sound like a gospel song. Randy thought her performance was great. Paula thought she was magical and no one else is like her. Simon thought she was incredible and she made it sound like an original recording. Of course he couldn’t compliment her without making a crack about her looking surprised, but that’s neither here nor there.

Blake

Blake sang “Imagine” by John Lennon. I am familiar with this song so I let the comparisons begin. He didn’t really do anything different to the song. He was okay, minus pitch problems, but it was karaoke. If I were to critique something else, I would suggest that he practice singing in a mirror. He has lip issues when he sings. Randy didn’t really like Blake’s performance. Paula seemed two-sided. First she said she agreed with Randy and then she said he did a great job. Simon was the same as Paula. He thought Blake didn’t bring anything to the song, but he was good. I think the judges were kind of lenient towards him, but that’s just me.

Lakisha

Lakisha sang “I Believe” by Fantasia. I like this song. I was scared for her since she sang another song by an American Idol winner. She did a great job. I actually thought she sang it better than Fantasia. She had a pitch problem, but she did a great job. Randy thought it was a great song choice. He didn’t think it was her best, but he loved it. Paula didn’t really like her version. She thought she did a good job, but she thought Fantasia was better. Simon didn’t like it either. He thought she was emotional, but he preferred Fantasia’s version too. He thought she has an issue with shouting. That seemed like a weak excuse to me. Fantasia shouted in the song too and he loved that. Paula was using a 20 minute weak excuse too because as I said, Fantasia shouted in the song too and they both thought that version was good. Are they trying to get Lakisha voted off? Could that be why they are being so hard on her? I admit she has sung better songs, but she wasn’t anywhere near as bad as they made it seem.

Phil

Phil sang “The Change” by Garth Brooks. This is another song I’m not familiar with. He started the song shaky and pitchy, but he got better towards the middle and end. I was pretty indifferent about the song. Randy thought Phil did his thing and had a nice vocal. Paula thought he was fantastic and this was his best song. Simon liked him. He thought his country tone was better. He gave him a tip to connect better with the song and he would do great. I guess he has a point. Maybe Phil would do better if he connects more with the song.

Jordin

Jordin sang “You’ll Never Walk Alone”. I thought she was great as usual. She had pitch problems, but she was still great. This girl can sing her butt off. She really hit the high notes great. It was a great way to end the show. Randy thought this was the best vocal of anyone in the six seasons. Paula thought she did a lovely job. Simon thought she was fantastic. He thought she would have a hit record with this song. I definitely agreed with the judges. She was excellent.

The results show

The majority of the show was dedicated to Idol giving back. There were performances by several artists as well as footage of children in American and Africa. There were also music videos featuring the Idols as well as the celebrities.

Throughout the show, Ryan let Blake, Melinda, Phil, and Lakisha know that they were safe. It was down to Jordin and Chris. They had to wait as usual before they found out if they were going home. There were more performances and messages from celebrities. Ryan finally got to the results. When he said Chris was safe, I was speechless. I just knew that Jordin was gone. Just before he announced it, I figured no one was going home. It would have been hard to believe that Jordin would have left. Ryan claimed that no one could be eliminated on a charity night. Next week, two Idols will be eliminated. This week’s votes and next week’s votes will be added together. I hope this doesn’t mean that Jordin’s going home next week.

After the results were read, the Idols were shown with Bono. The Idols performed “An American Prayer” together. They did a great job together.

I like Jordin too. I think she can really sing. I hope that she wins too. She can sing any genre of music and do a great job.
