Is It High Time John and Edward Left The X Factor?

John and Edward, a 18 year old duo in a singing show have created a massive debate in Britain’s singing competition TV show, X Factor. Despite all the votes they’ve received, they have got a lot of media backlash. So should they leave?

A lot of Britons out there would probably be screaming ‘YES!’ at the title of this article.

For the others out there, who don’t know who John and Edward are and what the X Factor is – John and Edward are an Irish duo (they are twins) lead by their Irish mentor, Louis Walsh, contesting in the British version of American Idol, the X Factor, a singing competition TV show. John and Edward or now Jedward are probably the most hilarious pair of teens you will see – very entertaining but not the best singers in the pack. Ever since the start of the show, the debate has raged on – should Jedward still stay in the competition because they are entertaining, or should they leave because they are vocally incompetent?

My answer is time will tell.

Nearly more than 4 weeks in to the live shows, Jedward continue to stay in the race to become Britain’s best voice and much to the shock of many, they have even topped the live public vote. The media has constantly retaliated against the fact that Jedward are still in the competition, there are many conspiracy theories saying how X Factor and Simon Cowell have set it all up so that Jedward win and everyone wonders when is this all going to end?

My answer is time will tell.

Jedward have constant received a lot of stick for their bad voices and have been given a myriad of discouraging names. They’ve created such turmoil that Cheryl Cole, one of the judges on the panel of the show said they were her “guilty pleasure” where as Simon Cowell on the other hand was “desperately worried” that they would win. Should they win or should they not?

My answer is time will tell.

I think that these boys have to be given something a chance. They have very clearly divided the nation but that doesn’t mean that they should go through these opinions. Why are people giving them a hard time when they are clearly voting for them? Make you minds up, people! Do you want an act that is extremely entertaining to stay in the competition or do you want to send away an act that doesn’t match the vocal prowess that the other contestants have?

Jedward aren’t the best of singers. I admit that. Jedward staying in the competition could very possibly be hindering someone else’s chance of making it big in the music industry. But let’s face it, they are even topping the votes, so clearly there must be something that is working. Most people like supporting the underdogs and in this case – Jedward so are people using Jedward as revenge against Simon Cowell? Because if they are, I think it is sadistic to make two young 18 year old boys a national weapon against Simon’s regime. Simon is harsh and critical but every word he utters oozes truth. Even if they do win the competition, hardly any of the X Factor winners excluding Leona Lewis have made it big world wide. They stay in the spotlight and then the spotlight fades out on them so the nation shouldn’t make Jedward win, only to not buy their album once it has released and making the entire X Factor experience a waste of time for them.

I believe that Jedward should win the competition, the way it is continuing and maybe that will be shut everyone up who has an issue with them. They make you laugh and they make you think “What the hell are they doing here?” but more importantly, they are naïve boys who shouldn’t be stuck in the middle of a battle between those who vote them every week to stay in the competition and those who want them to leave. So, is it high time that Jedward left?

My answer is, despite the entertaining but talentless side to them, we should do what is right and that can only be found out at the end because time will tell.

I’m split on this one. True, the boys are fun to watch – so full of enthusiasm. I’d probably quite enjoy seeing them on stage or TV but then, on the other hand, one of the prime aims of X Factor is to find a singer who can sell records and there I’m afraid they’d fall well and truly to the bottom of the heap! Can’t see too many people queuing outside HMV to buy their CD!! I’ve no doubt that, whether they make it further or not, someone will pick them up and give them a good entertaining career – and good luck to the boys I say!

I think they are fun, but I wouldn’t want them to win. There are so many really good singers this year. Good work.

They MUST go….total rubbish! I don’t even find them entertaining. I think Louis made a bad call, and excluded a potentially good group for this pair of talentless muppets!!

A well written article. I’m from the UK and falling out of love with the X-Factor. Compared to American Idol little hope is in store for winners unless they can find American producers to write and produce successful material for them, hence the success of Leona Lewis and the path route for Alexandra Burke. The show makes a mockery of contestants and is in serious need of revamping if voters are to take it seriously or see it for the big brother appeal it now has, seeing voters support the underdog with the entertainment factor. No offence to Jedward but I doubt very much if the people voting for them would buy their records. As you say… time will tell. Time will also tell us that Britain needs to look into finding people that can produce music in Britain instead of churning out shineless stars. Brilliant read, well explained for non UK readers. Keep up the good work.

I enjoyed your article. X Factor doesn’t air in America. I have heard about the show though. I think that the show should be based on talent, the powers that be want votes to count. As long as votes are what matter, then John and Edward should stay since the people seem to like them. The same thing happens on American Idol too. People who have a lot of talent end up going home because the fans vote for the more popular contestants. There are times when I think that the judges shoudl decided the winner because maybe talent would win over popularity. JMO

I am most certainly a Jedward fan. They are so fun, and they are the act that I look forward to seeing perform every single week. I know that they can’t win the contest, as the prize wouldn’t suit them, but even so, I like to think that they could still get a fairly good career from the publicity that they’ve gained from the show.

I am Irish and these guys have to go..I have watched xfactor since it began and loved the idea of unknown singers being given a chance in such a show.Over the past two weeks ive watched two of my favourite singers being voted out over two inferior acts.Simon in both cases left it to the public vote to decide. Is it not the judges responsibility to give the better singer a fair chance??Simon has lost the plot and seems to think the we are all stupid not to see that xfactor has become simon factor..He decides who goes and who stays and how the show is run..I feel sorry for the twins..They should have never got to the finals..It was louis who should be blamed..Its seems to me that louis and simon are having their own private battle of egos and everyone else has to sit there and watch. Finally the only reason the twins are now lioked be simon is simple! They have brought in millions of pounds in phone revenue for simon. Its all about money in the end..Simon has ruined the program and himself..

  16. a really enjoyable article. The X-FACTOR is an immensely popular show in U.K and only today i saw an interview on Alan Tichmark’s show in which a celebrity praises Simon Cowell by saying that he’s the most popular man on the planet and can sense talent at a glance. also full creadit to his team which have contributed to the popularity of the show. it’s very hard to decide who should move on in the success ladder. wonderful write, beautifully worded.

Very interesting read! Unfortunately I do not watch the X-Factor.

  18. oppss… sorry, i didn’t know them but i find them good looking!

  19. William says:

    Very well written un-biased article.
I wish they would of won X-Factor just to annoy Simon Cowell, however I thought they were horrible.

I don’t watch much of these TV shows, however I only watched it to see them. The day when they got voted off, I didn’t watch it again until the final.
