About Mara Clara

Mara Clara is a Philippine TV drama on ABS-CBN which ran from 1992 to 1997. It is considered the Longest Running Series in Philippine Television. It is adapted from the novel of Emil Cruz Jr. of the same title. Emil Cruz Jr. also directed the TV series.

From 1992 to 1995, Mara Clara was an afternoon drama series. It is only in 1996 that it was given a primetime slot until it ended in 1997. It is also considered as the Mother of All Soap Operas in the Philippines.

It is said that Mara Clara launched the careers of Judy Ann Santos and Gladys Reyes. Judy Ann Santos played the role of Mara David and Gladys Reyes played the role of Clara del Valle.

About Mara Clara Remake

ABS-CBN announced the remake of Mara Clara last August 2010. The pilot episode of Mara Clara remake aired last October 25, 2010.

The Mara Clara remake is part of ABS-CBN’s celebration of 60 Years of Soap Opera in the Philippines. It stars Kathryn Bernardo as Mara David and Julia Montes as Clara del Valle.

What is the difference between the old Mara Clara TV drama and the Mara Clara remake?

Different Cast

Aside from the main characters of Mara and Clara which are now played by Kathryn Bernardo and Julia Montes, all of the other characters in the Mara Clara remake are played by different actors.

Among the most prominent actors in the Mara Clara remake and their characters are the following: Bobby Andrews will play the role of Amante (formerly portrayed by Juan Rodrigo), Ping Medina as Kardo (formerly played by Dan Fernandez), John Manalo as Eris (formerly played by Christopher Rojas), Albi Casino as Christian (formerly portrayed by Wowie de Guzman), Chokoleit as CG (formerly played by Eagle Riggs), Jhong Hilario as Gary (formerly portrayed by Eruel Tongco), Mylene Dizon as Susan (formerly played by Susan Africa).

Different Twists

Mara Clara is about the story of two girls who had been switched when they were babies. Mara who was supposed to be a del Valle grow up as a David, and Clara who was supposed to be a David grow up as a del Valle.

The David family is poor while the del Valle family is well off. This theme of switched identities has been the recurring theme in most Philippine soap operas.

The promoters of the Mara Clara remake are promising new twists to the story of Mara Clara. However, they also said that the spirit of the story will be kept.
