Oprah to Leave Tv?

Say it isn’t so.

According to her producers, Oprah Winfrey will announce on show today (Friday, November 20, 2009) that she will end her illustrious television career.  She will tell her audience that her last show will air on September, 21, 2011 after having been on the air at that time for about 27 years.  It was probably the most successful daytime talk show ever.

Why make such an announcement now?  I’ve been around broadcasting long enough to know that when a blockbuster announcement is made well in advance of an event it is done so to throw the spotlight on the principal–a publicity stunt, if you will.  This type of information tends to draw temporary attention to the people involved.  It is my judgment that we are hearing this due to falling TV ratings and sluggish readership of O Magazine following Mis Winfrey’s endorsement of Barack Obama for president.

Ladies, don’t start wringing your hands just yet.  By the time 2011 rolls around we will all have forgotten today’s announcement that she will leave television.  I suspect Oprah will have forgotten it, as well.

Everybody has their distinct signature and years of regular shows can sap creativity. It’s a good idea to take a break. There will be something new for sure, and that will be good for Oprah as well as for us.

TV people do everything they can just to increase their ratings….

  12. If it is true, what will be her next important gig? Maybe, politics? I wonder what would happen if she would decide to run for president one day? Can you picture Oprah, Sarah Palin and Hillary Clinton running at the same time?
