Oprah Winfrey Calling It Quits…. So What?

The woman is not a saint…

So Oprah is ‘walking away’.  Who really cares?  Sorry, I’m just not feeling it.    Oh, I get it.  Oprah’s great.  Maybe it’s because I’m a guy; It kind of goes without saying that the show is aimed for the most part at women.  I can honedtly say that in 24 years, I have never watched an episode from beginning to end.  Snippets, sure.  Tom Cruise and Chris Rock come to mind, and even a few minutes of that ridiculous Mike Tyson interview.  But I’ve just never been an ‘Oprah’ kind of guy.

And I realize that Oprah’s wonderful.  Spends a lot on charity, does a lot of good things.  But I’ve never completely bought into her image.  She is where she is, in large part, because of an image that she has cultivated very carefully over these 20 some years.  She could, for all we know, be an evil, ruthless witch.  I know, I know.   They’ve seen her show every since 1986, and they just know her.  You can’t fake that kind of sincerity, right?  Good grief.

In all honesty, her charitable acts, while commendable, are a bit less so when you consider that she is worth the gross national product of…. well…. the entire damn world.  I didn’t hear her mention that during her tearful ‘what I’m grateful for’ speech, but then it’s easy to pretend money doesn’t matter when you have it all.  I’ve always felt that celebrities and athletes- those who make money from fame- have an obligation to give some of it back.  Not all of them do, so kudos to her.  But there are many who also do, and we’re not forced to watch every charitable transaction live in 112 countries.  The woman is not a saint.  There are heroes in this world, but someone who gives 1% of their income isn’t one of them.  Hell, I give 3%, I just don’t make quite as much.  No one’s calling me a hero.

But we’re not done yet.  We do realize that while teary goodbyes are nice (and make for great ratings) she in reality isn’t going any damn where.  Over to her own network (Yeah, the one she owns) where she is fully expected to do another show.  One where she will, in all liklihood, give stuff away on national television and talk to celebrities.  Sound familiar?

My point is this; we really need, in today’s world, to keep a bit of perspective.  This country’s unemployment is still at what… 10%?  Our kids are still dying across the drink defending her right to be filthy rich.  Children are dying of starvation and in genocides.  I’m sure Oprah is a great lady, but in the overall scheme of things, she’s just another overpaid, overhyped bit of celebrity dribble.  Go ahead and look up to her.  I’ll be up here admiring the $30,000 a year soldier coming home with one leg and the $24,000 teacher building our children’s future.

So Oprah is walking away.  Who really cares?

  5. A.L.Smith says:

great write. I agree about the teachers and soldiers. Lets give the credit to the true heroes not the celebrity sitting on her own personal fortune.

  6. lisa leverton says:

never watch day time TV anyway…such a waste of time!

  7. PJDaniel says:

I little bit more bash-up than I would have done. But the bottom line is – yes, she is yet another over-paid and over-hyped celebrity that America thrust a crown upon. And she wants to leave, while her glory still lasts. I do have my own sentiments on her though. Will come out with an article shortly. But you’re right, in the bigger picture, the world is not going to miss her THAT much!

  8. Kaetus says:

totally agree with you, nicely done

  9. You’ve made good points–especially the soldier and teacher example. There are many unsung heroes who go about daily life and are never recognized for their contribution to society.

Where I think Oprah has done a service is that she helped to change perceptions about black women. She did a lot to counter racist attitudes. Her contribution in that regard has earned her merit.

I don’t understand one thing about this. She is leaving, okay, fine. There are more urgent things that need attending to, like our economy!!!

Oprah Winfrey is a great celebrity who touches millions of fans all around the globe. In her talk show, she discuss various topics of things that matter with empathetic heart. She has the skills to change life of her fans, showing them light in the darkness. Therefore it is why we better be a good listener to her show.

  12. I vote for Sexyhood as her replacement.

  13. Well Ms.O has did alot of good stuff, I wish I could have benefited from her generosity, but I haven’t and I don’t watch her show any longer I use to but I agree the hero of today are the ones not mentioned Like law enforcement, military, teachers, parents, ministers, healthcare workers. So suck up the tears and thanks for the memories but lets move on.”WOW I sound mean, oops” maybe I’m just tired of people who got it want everybody else to feel remorse. I just can’t do it. Congrats I guess for having a career.

  18. Citra says:

Oprah is great and she has done a good job. And yes, she’s rich, you’re just jealous of her. It’s shame why some people bash others just because they are rich.

  19. carol gibson says:

By the looks of these comments, no wonder she is leaving. I really don’t care, either.

She was announcing her departure a while back, and then changed her mind. Was it so she could help Obama first?

She meant well, but she seems to have gotten an inflated ego about herself, and about Obama getting elected.

Wonder how much she contributed to his campaign?

Let’s hope for a middle class, ordinary white woman who is in touch with the everyday struggles of all women. She doesn’t have to be gay, or black, or glamorous (and pretending to have a soulful focus.) I’m looking forward to an average person as a replacement figurehead, myself.

  20. Susan says:

I have great admiration for Oprah Winfrey. She has done a lot of good with what she has been given. No, not a saint, but a great human being.

  21. Duff D Moss says:

Awesome! Now that the man hating piece of crap she devil is going off the air, I predict that divorce rates will go down.

  22. Rumor has it that she’s planning to open her own station next year. Maybe she’s just taking the time out for planning and the much needed break, both for herself and her audience. She’ll be back.

  23. Paul2KAD says:

How much plastic surgery has that woman had?!

I didn’t realise she was still on television (haven’t seen or even heard of her show for at least a decade) but she actually looks younger now than she did all those years ago!

    How weird is that?

  24. Dr. Iverson Taylor says:

I agree and I am black. So no jibes on that basis, farewell performances are normally done at the end. That was a promotional stunt to boost her viewing figures. Who knows she might change her mind like most pop stars after their sell out farewell tours. This is classic manipulation of a gullible public. When she interviews average members of the public she always has an experience similarly comparable with her subject. Smacking of insincerity, Oprah pontificates!
