Navigating your way round Australian terrestrial TV.
So, as with everything it depends on where you are coming from……..but the general consensus would be there is nothing on the terrestrial channels. A generalisation of course.
There are currently 5 channels. Sport dominates at weekends. There is no 9pm watershed so some programmes air v early for the British sensibilities. American TV sitcoms are popular as are UK and US formats such as ”Australian Idol”, “Dancing with the Stars”. There is some excellent Australian drama, and personally I would like to see more.
The number and length of ad breaks will drive you nuts, though the ads are good. And the practice of an ad break right at the end of a programme going back for a one liner is just bonkers.
On a personal note, Bondi Rescue is fabulous, but I do miss Corrie.
I live in Canada. Our homegrown movies and tv shows are pretty lame – but getting better. It used to be that you could tell that a show was Canadian by the bad lighting and the stilted dialogue. Most of what I watch comes from the US.
Actually, there are some Hollywood movies that film scenes in Canada because it is cheaper here. My cousin got a bit part in ‘Shall we Dance’ where she and her husband got to dance with J Lo. Most of their scene got cut out though.
We get some kids’ tv series from Australia. I sometimes watch them just to hear your accents. There is one about mermaids that my kids sometimes watch.
