Five Things I Hate About “the Vampire Diaries”

Despite being a popular show (on The CW, which mean nothing), "The Vampire Diaries" is a prime example of what’s wrong with teen-oriented shows nowadays.

I admit it.  I watch “The Vampire Diaries”.  Not really by choice, my wife watches it but it’s not like I’m forced to watch it, I am free to get up and leave at any time.  “Vampire Diaries” is The CW’s most popular show and the only one that is actually doing well in the ratings but there are several things that just annoy the dickens out of me when I watch it and normally I can get past it but it seems as if all of The CW’s new series are victims of these problems or a variation of them.

5.  Those Aren’t Vampires…

Vampires are a century old belief and admittedly one of the coolest.  At least until they became brooding teenagers that have somehow overcome their weaknesses to sunlight.  Sadly, with the advent of the Twilight saga, vampires are no longer cool.  Vampires, for years, have been very sexual characters using the blood feeding in highly sexual scenes but now, they just want to stay up all night and talk?  Also, how come today’s vampires have caveman brows?  Has anyone else noticed that?  On the plus side, at least “Vampire Diaries” attempt to stay more in line with actual vampire mythos such as harmed by sunlight (unless they apparently wear some type of ring), can be killed by a stake through the heart and can actually be tempted to suck blood.  However, that temptation has led to something else in “The Vampire Diaries”.

4.  What’s With All the Killing?

How many people have died during the course of eight episodes?  I’ve lost count.  The thing is, vampires are very careful.  In everything I’ve read about them, they never outright kill someone because killing means a body, it means people start asking questions.  Now these vampires have the ability to erase memories (or block them, they don’t clarify which) so I guess that’s really handy when someone who knows a lot of people gets killed but like series that use the “villain-of-the-week” gimmick, the more deaths, the less impact they have especially if all you kill are side characters and “also stars”.

3.  Quit Being a Pansy!

Vampires today, at least vampires that are the stars of the series, are the wimpiest bunch of supernatural folklore ever!  On “The Vampire Diaries”, Damon (played by Ian Somerhalder) is the closest thing to a real vampire that I’ve seen in a few years.  Stefan (Paul Wesley) is terrible at his job as vampire.  A true vampire, steeped in European folklore would have already begun sucking Elena’s (Nina Dobrev) blood and gotten her into bed.  Instead, he does nothing but watch as Damon does awful, horrible stuff to the people of Mystic Falls.  He’s had ample opportunities to do away with Damon but has done nothing.  Ironically, Salvatore, Stefan and Damon’s last name, is Italian for saviour but so far I’m not seeing it.  Maybe once Damon’s “diabolical plan” goes into action (as referenced in episode 8 to one-time character, Lexi) Stefan will step up his game.  Wait, Damon killed Lexi?  Stefan did nothing?  There goes that hope.

2.  You Love Stefan?  Really?

I am all for some vampire loving.  From Anne Rice’s Interview With the Vampire series to the Biblical origins of succubi.  I can understand Elena falling in love with Stefan but she has seen first hand the horribleness of being around vampires.  Yes, yes, I understand that “love conquers all” but maybe she and Stefan should take a time out for a while until this whole Damon thing goes away.  I mean, she already has enough drama in her life without having to worry about her sort-of boyfriend gnawing on her neck.  And don’t get me started on the whole “he’s immortal” thing.

1.  The Casting

I really have nothing against the casting but it seems like all the female cast is interchangeable.  The hair color may be different but it’s still the same character.  And the girls almost all look alike anyway.  All CW shows suffer from this now as all the girls have nice eyes, pouty lips (maybe an underbite) and slightly large front teeth.  How The CW (and The WB and UPN before it) can go from great casting as “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”, “Veronica Mars” and “Roswell” to crap casting such as “90210″, “Melrose Place” and “Vampire Diaries” is beyond me.  You can literally take any character and replace that actor with another actor and no one will notice.  Prove me wrong cast of “Vampire Diaries”.  Prove me wrong.

I have never seen “The Vampire Diaries”,but I have to wonder, why waste your life complaining about something? Some people like it,some people don’t.So leave it at that and get over yourself. No one really cares if you like it or not,so it’s best to just shut up and move along with your life. And if it’s good enough to be made into a television show…then it couldn’t be that bad.I’m not a fan,nor do I watch it,but I am not going to ruin a fan’s liking for it just because I don’t have any interests in it.

  5. Brandy says:

Yeah I like most vampire shows, movies ect, but honestly I watched the entire season over a week my friend recorded them for me, but it is so chessy and I watched True Blood and both the twilight movies & this show just seems to take unoriginal ideas from whats popular out there right now and spun it like it was some new novel idea. I am not a fan, I liked the Twilight Series of books though but Anne Rice is way better at Vampire stories. They used to be considered romantic and gothic, tortured, sexual, erotic and macabre and now they seem so watered down & predictable. It is just a lil annoying haha

Ok who made you hall monitor? Obviously you are a fan and your taking these comments personally haha and if you “wonder why someone whould waste their time complaining about something?” Let me ask you this, why did you just waste your time complaining about someone complaining? Lol If you dont care so much then why are you on here being an opinion nazi? This is a public forum where people express their opinions, if yo don’t like it then don’t get online and read it. Duh.

Hey, I have recently read your posts… and well I am a VD-aholic, but I understand some people don’t like it…

Well actually I don’t think its really that they don’t like VD, but they don’t like Vampires, or they are on other vampire movies/shows, and only see VD as a competition.

I agree, the vampires have differed from then and now, but actually I find them all still interesting. Well, actually I wouldn
‘t watch VD, if it weren’t for Damon :)

But, I have a question for you, I mean you seem to know A LOT about VD for a person who randomly watches it with your wife… I mean it kinda sounds like you obsess over how you hate it enough to reason why.

Now you can say I obsess over people who don’t like it, and I’m not saying I don’t. I mean, I do, because most of the time people who make these “Reasons why I hate yada yada” Its because they have nothing better to do.

And espeacially if you married with a job! WHY IN HEAVENS WOULD YOU WASTE YOUR TIME INSULTING A TEEN VAMPIRE SHOW?

I am a sixth grader, I have rights to be stating my oppinion on useless forums made for rambling.

I do understand your POV on Stefan. He… well can be basically everything you said about. But in my honest oppinion, I still think of him as a good guy :)

And I have to disagree with you about how all CW casts look the same, our generation has changed, we don’t all look COMPLETLY DIFFERENT from each other, but you have 90210’s Annie, with long brown hair, Naiomi, with her curly odd-colored hair, and then you have two girls with black hair, who made that a sin? We can’t change all of our looks.

And BTW, TVD girls look NOTHING like each other, Elena is a tall brunette, Bonnie is a black girl, and Caroline is a blonde for goodness sake!

I admit the vampire-overload sucks. But really obsessed vampire-haters like you? Well I have to say, they suck more.

  8. Ashley says:

I totally agree with Suzanne. I mean you hardly know the show and your’e waisting your time trashing it.GET A LIFE. You’re probably 50 and your’e trashing a teenage vampire show? I disagree with every single word you said. It’s a popular tv show because it interesting and 4.9 million people watch it!I don’t think that would be a stupid tv show. You would have to be blind not to see the differences in the actresses! There’s only 5 stupid people that don’t even watch this great show and they’re hating it!4.9 million beats 5.STOP PUTTING STUPID THINGS ON THE INTERNET!I bet i could show you every word you wrote is wrong!!!

  9. Maria says:

Suzanne, you missed the point. We love vampire drama. We just hate Vampire Diaries. Its so very dull. Nothing about Vampire Diaries has anything to do with vampires anyhow. its mostly about a wimpy guy with a mean brother. the fact that they are vampires doesn’t even matter to the plot.I LOVE Buffy, Being Human, the Gates, and I tolerate True Blood. I like twilight well enough, even. I HATE HATE HATE Vampire diaries. Its a boring show, about boring teenagers, and the fact that two of those teenagers are supposedly vampires doesn’t matter in the least. What does Stephan do differently because he is a vampire? Not much. Even Damon is pretty much just a mean boy. If they had really ived more then sixteen years they wouldn’t act so totally childish.

  10. Maria says:

I just wanted to add, the saddest thing about the show is Elenas so called character. Who can respect a girl that changes her mind about loving someone more then four times? Its sad that girls get the idea that self absorbed and indecisive is somehow a good thing. Real honorable people do not go back on their decision to love someone unless something very serious happens, like abuse, or very tangible betrayal. Elena actually ran out of the room because she saw a photo of a woman who she knew looked just like her did indeed look like her. No one respects women who run out of rooms or cars without explaining themselves. Its childish, sad behavior. And no one is turned on by girls who play hard to get. Its sad that this show its still on. Someone that acts like Bella will get further in life then someone that is very emotionally high maintenance. Its not a sign of strength, but weakness.

  11. maria says:

One last thing…To Mariyah; If you think that he is wasting his time voicing his opinion about this show, then why do you think its OK for you to spend your time telling us what you think about his opinion? In fact how come its OK for you to be spending your time reading his opinion, much less taking the time to write a comment? Don’t you have anything else to do??? Im sorry to tell you this but people still have opinions on TV shows even when they get married and get jobs. And most of us are interested in other peoples opinions even if they have jobs and families. You are making NO SENSE!

  12. Maria says:

Oh and NO vampires do not traditionally fear the sun. READ a book! Like Dracula by Bram Stoker. Or Carmilla by LeFanu. Or the Vapyre by Polidori. Or any Vampire Classic. Read up on the European Folklore too. You will find that although Vampires prefer night time they are NOT hurt by sunlight. Thats an invention of the movies. Thats one reason I like twilight. I HATE the idea that they go poof in daylight. Its really cheap. People can get cheap laughs out of the vampires in twilight simply looking odd in daytime, but that is exactly what is traditional.

  16. joan says:

I love the vampire diaries, it’s supposed to give us entertainment, so it’s not a neccessity to copy the folklore or mythos vampire. Like seriously, you talked as if you KNOW vampires, you don’t nor does anyone in hollywood, I guess. Stop asking the hollywood TV series to copy all the myths and just try to play it by themselves, after all, it’s for entertainment.
Maybe people should really stop writing bout how they hate a vampire series BECAUSE the vampires are different from mythos, and write bout what they REALLY hate bout the show. It’s kinda old. “the vampires in twilight, VD blah blah are different from real vampires” if you’re going to write something you hate, it’d be better if you write something more original, EVERYBODY is talking bout how they hate the vampires nowadays for being not similar to the folklore.

I’m just giving my opinions, I love VD, but I’m not going to hate someone just because they hates VD, I just thought you should write a better article on WHY you hate it. Cheers! :)

I love theVampire Diaries !! its amazing BUT i can see why people hate it and i understand people hating it because i hate twilight and people love it..its just my opinion…I think everyone should have their own opinion and whta does it matter if someone doesnt like something you do?? really why would it matter?

  20. mary says:

er actually vampire diaries ROCKS and erm they didnt copy twilight because vampire diaries came first

  21. Ella says:

It’s actually quite an intriguing way you’ve put this.
Personally, I am a fan of the show.
True, I do long for the days when vampires went around having sex and draining people. But it does appear quite a few times in the show.
All the murders & death on the show actually make me laugh. I’ve lost count of how many people died as well. Mystic Falls and the surrounding area has probably the highest death rate in the entire state. It’s a wonder the authorities haven’t done anything about it.
Overall, I’m intriguied by the show because of the differing spin they put on vampires, compared to the (highly) watered down Twilight books & movies. It’s nice to see that there is an effort on the show of murder, horror, and blood.

  22. Lulu says:

the deaths – well, yes they annoy me, everyone dies, but what can you do? its a bit of horror that the show’s supposed to have. you rather they were tortured?
no show is perfect. yeah, i don’t really like stefan; i prefer ripper stefan tbh, but hey. there’s gonna be decisions and characters that you don’t like, unless its an amazingly fantastic show
me? i LOVE tvd. i love damon, and i love delena :)

  23. Rocky says:

I don’t like Vampire Diaries all that much either. but I don’t care if other people like it because I like shows other people don’t like too. It’s whatever floats your boat, right? I do have a question though: Out of curiosity, how many people who actually watch Vampire Diaries know that it was a book series too, like Twilight? A lot of people where I’m from don’t seem to know this. Is it because of the age group Vampire Diaries tends to attract, and they wouldn’t really remember a book series that started in the early 90’s? Just curious because I’ve always been the type of person who has to read the book first before I even think about watching a movie or show based on it (and yes, I don’t like the books either, sorry, it’s whatever floats your boat, right?). I am not attacking Vampire Diaries fans at all, just wanted to know. Maybe it’s just where I’m from. And haha, I agree about the one vampire’s eyebrows and I tease my roommate who is an avid Vampire Diaries fan.

uuuuhhhhhggg. i cant even watch the show. they totally butchered the book. EVERYTHING is different.

read the book, but keep in mind, it’s young adult.

(and why does Elena have a teenage slacker brother when in the book she has a 7 year old sister???)
