The Galaxy 15 satellite was damaged over a month ago. Likely cause, solar storm. Now it is on track to collide with cable television satellite, AMC 11.
Galaxy 15 satellite is on a course to collide with AMC 11 satellite.
Galaxy 15 has suffered damage that was likely brought on by a solar storm. The satellite communications ended on April 8, 2010. Galaxy 15 is owned by Intelsat and the satellite has been out of control for over a month. Attempts to communicate with this satellite have failed, the situation is quickly getting more serious. Galaxy 15 is nearing AMC 11 with a collision date of May 23, 2010.
As the satellites become closer to each other, interference is and will be an issue. AMC 11 is used to receive and transmit digital communications and cable television to all cable networks in the United States.
Since communications have not been renewed with the out of control Galaxy 15, the next step is to maneuver AMC 11 out of its path. AMC 11 will be moved approximately 60 miles out of its original orbit, to avoid collision. Although Galaxy 15 is uncontrollable, it is still sending and receiving transmissions, which is causing a concern for interference.
Galaxy 15 was intended to be kept in use until 2022, so it is unclear what will ultimately happen to this satellite. At this time, Intelsat has not given up trying to fix the satellite, they are just trying to avoid a satellite collision in the near future.
The most important part of this story was delicately cut down to one sentence or less, in every article that I reviewed. A solar storm is the likely culprit for the Galaxy 15 problems. We just entered solar maximum and it is going to be very intense. This may be the first of many incidents like this. Maybe that is why my local news station is telling everyone to buy a weather/emergency radio, during almost every broadcast. Hmmmmm…
Hmmm….So we have to be very careful.
I think this is a real great blog post.Really thank you! Great.
Usually I do not read article on blogs, but I would like to say that this write-up very forced me to try and do so! Your writing taste has been surprised me. Thank you, quite great article.
