The BBC Fails Its Responsibility

Once again the BBC ducks the chance to support the British TV industry.

As the government calls for the BBC to “topslice” some of its guranteed licence fee income to ITV, once again we must challenge the remit of this public service broadcasting service. Is it really acceptable for the Corporation to chase ratings when that means more interesting minority based programming is ignored. Can they really justify a weekly Holby City, a weekly Casualty, a tri weekly Eastenders whilst denying a platform for exciting film drama. This is just rationalisation not programme making. Shame on them.

This week saw Tony Garnet, chief of World Producions, give up the fight. A great producer amongst a sea of mediocrity, Tony brought us a distinguished slate of relevant dram from KES in the sixties to THIS LIFE in the 1990’s. There is no place for a “Tony” in today’s superficial culture of fear.

Tony I worked for you once and loved it. Today I salute you and seems only fitting it should happen on a day that the faceless talentless leadership at the BBC hides behinds its desk.
