The Virginian Comes to Dvd
The TV western The Virginian was finally released on DVD on March 9th. The show ran for nine seasons from 1961-1972. It was the first western to run for 90 minutes.

The Virginian was set on a ranch in Medicine Bow, Wyoming during the 1890’s. James Drury starred in the title role with Lee J. Cobb as the ranch owner. Doug McClure and Roberta Shore also had major roles. The show was famous for it’s notable guest stars such as George C. Scott, Bette Davis, Charles Bronson, and Lee Marvin. The show was surprisingly filmed in color throughout it’s nine year run which was very expensive in those days. The title character was always referred to as The Virginian and his real time was never revealed during the shows entire run.
The Virginian went through many cast changes over the years including 4 different ranch owners through the course of the series. Lee J Cobb and several regulars left after season four. The name of the show was changed to The Men From Shiloh for the ninth and final season with many changes to the set and costumes. After enjoying a stellar run of high ratings the show was finally cancelled in 1971 after 249 episodes.

Timeless Media finally released the first two seasons on DVD on March 9th. They released each season in two different sets of 15 episodes on 6 DVDs. Many never before seen cast interviews are also included on the DVDs. In spite of high demand for the sets, Timeless Media has released the sets in very limited quantity with most of them ending up on Ebay. We can only hope that more TV westerns will finally make it to DVD so that the fans can enjoy some memories from the past.
