Love them or hate them, dramas like Grey’s Anatomy, Gossip Girl and Dawson’s Creek have (had) a huge following. And as much as it can be annoying to watch the romances, maybe they are not that far away from reality.
What do they have in common, then? You say nothing? If only that were the case…This is really disturbing. Well, I have to admit I watched these shows- some more than the others and before you totally condemn my taste, I want to talk about what attracted and appalled me about these shows. And then I’ll get to the part where reality bites.
Dawson’s Creek

About: Dawson is a teenager in love with movies and especially Steven Spielberg’s work. He becomes infatuated with the new girl in school and this drives his best mate Joey crazy because she has been in love with him for a long time. Yes, Joey is a girl, played by Katie Holmes. Joey isn’t all that crazy about Dawson’s male best mate, Pacey who is a little lazy, talks a lot and is the every bit of hormonal teenager.
Why I watched it: Well, those of you who took a look at my work on Triond already know that I am fascinated with movies and the film-making process. And I have always wanted to be in the film industry. Not so much that I’d risk everything and go to L.A. and wait tables while trying to get a part, but it would be a dream come true to sell a script to Hollywood, work with some of the names I admire and who knows maybe even appear in the films a little? Forget my fantasies. When this show came out, I was in high school. So teen angst, impossible crushes and dreams hit home. And although I was a girl, I identified with Dawson a lot for both his passion and his romantic character.
Why I hated it: So, it was fun for a while. Then Dawson started having feelings for Joey. OK, it can happen right. Then they started this absolutely on-off romantic thing and then there was a point where Pacey got a crush for Joey, new kids arrived….It was like everyone was swinging. Everybody slept with everyone (or got on the verge of it) and well… it stopped being a show I habitually followed and became something I watched only if I stumbled upon it by accident and there was nothing else on.
Grey’s Anatomy

About: Interns, residents, operations. Lots of complications and pairing up. Yep, that about sums it up.
Why I watched it: Well, it was interesting that the women in the show seemed less romantic than the man, I liked McDreamy (don’t ask) and I liked the sarcastic humor of the show.
Why I hated it: Friends one minute, sleeping together the next. Sleeping together and in love, and then, what do you know, they are friends. On and off, making combinations of all the cast members. It was Dawson’s Creek all over in scrubs. But it was worse this time because overhormonal and stupid adults are a hell lot more annoying then their teenage/college versions. I go back once in a while. I find an episode I like but the next episode ends up being a teenage soap opera. My loyalty to Grey’s Anatmoy ended with the only decent (guest) character Denny Duquette (Jeffrey Dean Morgan)’s death.hihi
GOSSIP GIRL

About: New York society. Rich, spoiled and problematic teens with rich, spoiled and problematic parents.
Why I watched it: Well, call it guilty pleasure. I love New York, shopping and I like some action.
Why I hated it: OK, so it gets disturbing after a while to see highschoolers getting as much sex as Sex and The City’s Samantha. And then there is the issue of sleeping around with exes, best friends’ exes, best friends’ current dates, cheating, and going back in rounds….
THE REALITY
As much I would love to think stuff like this hardly ever happens in real life, or only in the celebrity circles, it is not exactly true. You hear about this in your circles, about friends of friends and on the news. But I decided to write about this yesterday, when one of my good friends gave me the updates on her love life. Apperently, an ex of mine was hitting on her. Yes, he knows we are friends. We met through her, in college. It could have been alright, still if:
- He has two close friends, both of whom I am also friends with. My friend who he has been hitting on dated one of them and had a crush on the other. And he knows about both. How weird is that? We were even on a trip together when we were still dating.
This is weird and definitely annoying. I get uncomfortable when crushes happen between two friends because more often than not that threatens the friendship. Now he wants to date my friend who had a thing with both his friends? This is Dawson’s Creek all over again. Except, that was a TV show with characters on a payroll and with screenwriters with bills to pay. So are we talking about life imitating art or art imitating life? Yes I realize my ex is an idiot. Hence, the ex status.
I don’t know of the other shows but I like Grey’s Anatomy,
.
it is real to life, and have damn good actors
Life my friend is so much worse out there for real..
Some like to escape the real world
Well, escaping the real world is a lot of fun, especially when Jeffrey Dean Morgan appears on Grey’s anatomy. Makes you believe that gorgeous guys can be decent and fun too;)
I haven’t seen any of these shows, but we have similar shows here in Britain. I tend to get very confused with who is dating who and I soon get bored. I enjoyed your points of view.
Christine
Now that’s crazy. Running away from real life and watching a show that’s exactly like real life. I think it all began with the Friends show. Now something weird programming is going on here..see the cycle? ;(
Well, Friends did have some stupid coupling episodes going on in the 9th Season (Yes, I admit it, I watched all 10) it kinda made up for it with its humor. The shows listed above make those relationships the center of everything and it is like nothing else matters or no one survives the single life.
I am proud to admit that I never dated a friend. I had a crush on a neighbor who later became a friend, though.

I haven’t seen any of these shows so I can’t give a good opinion.
Well, Mace, basically, it is the same with Friends, or That 70s Show. It can be a funny sitcom or a plain soap opera or teen drama. The fact is writers love to write episodes where friends date friends and their friends’ friends or their ex’s friends and then get back together with their exes… A very unhealthy thing, in my opinion. It is lazy and disrespectful of friendship. But even my friends are doing it so..that’s what I meant with the tie to reality.
Gossip Girl, the novel, dealt with important issues people don’t want to talk about
